Multimedia Translation and it’s role in Globalized World.

Multimedia is content that uses a combination of different content forms such as text, audio, images, animation, video and interactive content. Multimedia contrasts with media that use only computer displays such as text-only or traditional forms of printed or hand-produced material.

Multimedia translation usually referred to as audiovisual translation, is also a specialized branch of translation Industry which deals with the transfer of multimodal and multimedia texts into another language and/or culture. and which implies the use of a multimedia electronic system in the translation or in the transmission process.

Multimedia translation can be recorded and played, displayed, dynamic, interacted with or accessed by information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic devices, but can also be part of a live events & performance. Multimedia devices are electronic media devices used to store and experience multimedia content.

In Today’s era, the requirement for translations in the multimedia or entertainment industry continues to grow at a fast pace. Multimedia translation is utilized in various fields such as cinema, television, theater, advertisement and audiovisual communication. A variety of services in this area that are offered by translations include transcription, subtitling, dubbing, voice-over and lip-sync of videos, audios or movies.

In Multimedia Industry, specially translations is generally looked into four majors category.

1.Subtitling:  We generally see one or more lines of text on any movies, serials etc,  When we looked it as a translation of dialogue in a foreign language. It generally seen  at the bottom of a movie, short telefilms or video image.

2. Dubbing: It is post-production process used in film-making and video production, which substitutes the voice of the original medium with the foreign language.

3. Voice-over:  Although it is very similar to dubbing, but the main difference is that as there is usually a voice in the background.

4. Lip-sync: is a process where the insertion of audio attempts to match the lip movements of the original characters or actors. It is more often used in animation clips, movie and videos.

The globalization of communication networks has increased the domains of multimedia translation and is challenging ever more the translator’s role

A specialized and professional multimedia translators play a very important role in this industry. We often see Hollywood & Bollywood movies, whereas movie is subtitled and dubbed in foreign language as English Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Hindi, French, German & Italian etc.

A very important process is carried out in the multimedia translation of audios, videos, movies or subtitles is having a transcription of the original content, so it can be translated into the target language. This translation is carried out by human resources who generally follow some steps for producing a quality translation process (translation, edition and proofreading)  The primary translation modes employed in the audiovisual media include subtitling, closed captioning, subtitling and re voicing (which may occur in the form of dubbing, voice-over, mobile translation, interpreting or audio description). Multimedia works can also be adapted from one media to another, for example, Cinema, TV, and video game adaptation.
